- Acquiring Pronunciation Knowledge from Transcribed Speech Audio via Multi-task Learning Recent work has shown the feasibility and benefit of bootstrapping an integrated sequence-to-sequence (Seq2Seq) linguistic frontend from a traditional pipeline-based frontend for text-to-speech (TTS). To overcome the fixed lexical coverage of bootstrapping training data, previous work has proposed to leverage easily accessible transcribed speech audio as an additional training source for acquiring novel pronunciation knowledge for uncovered words, which relies on an auxiliary ASR model as part of a cumbersome implementation flow. In this work, we propose an alternative method to leverage transcribed speech audio as an additional training source, based on multi-task learning (MTL). Experiments show that, compared to a baseline Seq2Seq frontend, the proposed MTL-based method reduces PER from 2.5% to 1.6% for those word types covered exclusively in transcribed speech audio, achieving a similar performance to the previous method but with a much simpler implementation flow. 2 authors · Sep 15, 2024
- Knowledge-driven Subword Grammar Modeling for Automatic Speech Recognition in Tamil and Kannada In this paper, we present specially designed automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems for the highly agglutinative and inflective languages of Tamil and Kannada that can recognize unlimited vocabulary of words. We use subwords as the basic lexical units for recognition and construct subword grammar weighted finite state transducer (SG-WFST) graphs for word segmentation that captures most of the complex word formation rules of the languages. We have identified the following category of words (i) verbs, (ii) nouns, (ii) pronouns, and (iv) numbers. The prefix, infix and suffix lists of subwords are created for each of these categories and are used to design the SG-WFST graphs. We also present a heuristic segmentation algorithm that can even segment exceptional words that do not follow the rules encapsulated in the SG-WFST graph. Most of the data-driven subword dictionary creation algorithms are computation driven, and hence do not guarantee morpheme-like units and so we have used the linguistic knowledge of the languages and manually created the subword dictionaries and the graphs. Finally, we train a deep neural network acoustic model and combine it with the pronunciation lexicon of the subword dictionary and the SG-WFST graph to build the subword-ASR systems. Since the subword-ASR produces subword sequences as output for a given test speech, we post-process its output to get the final word sequence, so that the actual number of words that can be recognized is much higher. Upon experimenting the subword-ASR system with the IISc-MILE Tamil and Kannada ASR corpora, we observe an absolute word error rate reduction of 12.39% and 13.56% over the baseline word-based ASR systems for Tamil and Kannada, respectively. 3 authors · Jul 27, 2022
- QVoice: Arabic Speech Pronunciation Learning Application This paper introduces a novel Arabic pronunciation learning application QVoice, powered with end-to-end mispronunciation detection and feedback generator module. The application is designed to support non-native Arabic speakers in enhancing their pronunciation skills, while also helping native speakers mitigate any potential influence from regional dialects on their Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) pronunciation. QVoice employs various learning cues to aid learners in comprehending meaning, drawing connections with their existing knowledge of English language, and offers detailed feedback for pronunciation correction, along with contextual examples showcasing word usage. The learning cues featured in QVoice encompass a wide range of meaningful information, such as visualizations of phrases/words and their translations, as well as phonetic transcriptions and transliterations. - A Two-Step Approach for Data-Efficient French Pronunciation Learning Recent studies have addressed intricate phonological phenomena in French, relying on either extensive linguistic knowledge or a significant amount of sentence-level pronunciation data. However, creating such resources is expensive and non-trivial. To this end, we propose a novel two-step approach that encompasses two pronunciation tasks: grapheme-to-phoneme and post-lexical processing. We then investigate the efficacy of the proposed approach with a notably limited amount of sentence-level pronunciation data. Our findings demonstrate that the proposed two-step approach effectively mitigates the lack of extensive labeled data, and serves as a feasible solution for addressing French phonological phenomena even under resource-constrained environments. 4 authors · Oct 8, 2024
- CS3-Bench: Evaluating and Enhancing Speech-to-Speech LLMs for Mandarin-English Code-Switching The advancement of multimodal large language models has accelerated the development of speech-to-speech interaction systems. While natural monolingual interaction has been achieved, we find existing models exhibit deficiencies in language alignment. In our proposed Code-Switching Speech-to-Speech Benchmark (CS3-Bench), experiments on 7 mainstream models demonstrate a relative performance drop of up to 66% in knowledge-intensive question answering and varying degrees of misunderstanding in open-ended conversations. Starting from a model with severe performance deterioration, we propose both data constructions and training approaches to improve the language alignment capabilities, specifically employing Chain of Recognition (CoR) to enhance understanding and Keyword Highlighting (KH) to guide generation. Our approach improves the knowledge accuracy from 25.14% to 46.13%, with open-ended understanding rate from 64.5% to 86.5%, and significantly reduces pronunciation errors in the secondary language. - A systematic comparison of grapheme-based vs. phoneme-based label units for encoder-decoder-attention models Following the rationale of end-to-end modeling, CTC, RNN-T or encoder-decoder-attention models for automatic speech recognition (ASR) use graphemes or grapheme-based subword units based on e.g. byte-pair encoding (BPE). The mapping from pronunciation to spelling is learned completely from data. In contrast to this, classical approaches to ASR employ secondary knowledge sources in the form of phoneme lists to define phonetic output labels and pronunciation lexica. In this work, we do a systematic comparison between grapheme- and phoneme-based output labels for an encoder-decoder-attention ASR model. We investigate the use of single phonemes as well as BPE-based phoneme groups as output labels of our model. To preserve a simplified and efficient decoder design, we also extend the phoneme set by auxiliary units to be able to distinguish homophones. Experiments performed on the Switchboard 300h and LibriSpeech benchmarks show that phoneme-based modeling is competitive to grapheme-based encoder-decoder-attention modeling. 6 authors · May 19, 2020
- Non-native English lexicon creation for bilingual speech synthesis Bilingual English speakers speak English as one of their languages. Their English is of a non-native kind, and their conversations are of a code-mixed fashion. The intelligibility of a bilingual text-to-speech (TTS) system for such non-native English speakers depends on a lexicon that captures the phoneme sequence used by non-native speakers. However, due to the lack of non-native English lexicon, existing bilingual TTS systems employ native English lexicons that are widely available, in addition to their native language lexicon. Due to the inconsistency between the non-native English pronunciation in the audio and native English lexicon in the text, the intelligibility of synthesized speech in such TTS systems is significantly reduced. This paper is motivated by the knowledge that the native language of the speaker highly influences non-native English pronunciation. We propose a generic approach to obtain rules based on letter to phoneme alignment to map native English lexicon to their non-native version. The effectiveness of such mapping is studied by comparing bilingual (Indian English and Hindi) TTS systems trained with and without the proposed rules. The subjective evaluation shows that the bilingual TTS system trained with the proposed non-native English lexicon rules obtains a 6% absolute improvement in preference. 6 authors · Jun 21, 2021
- Polishing Every Facet of the GEM: Testing Linguistic Competence of LLMs and Humans in Korean We introduce the Korean Grammar Evaluation BenchMark (KoGEM), designed to assess the linguistic competence of LLMs and humans in Korean. KoGEM consists of 1.5k multiple-choice QA pairs covering five main categories and 16 subcategories. The zero-shot evaluation of 27 LLMs of various sizes and types reveals that while LLMs perform remarkably well on straightforward tasks requiring primarily definitional knowledge, they struggle with tasks that demand the integration of real-world experiential knowledge, such as phonological rules and pronunciation. Furthermore, our in-depth analysis suggests that incorporating such experiential knowledge could enhance the linguistic competence of LLMs. With KoGEM, we not only highlight the limitations of current LLMs in linguistic competence but also uncover hidden facets of LLMs in linguistic competence, paving the way for enhancing comprehensive language understanding.
