Reliable tool calling for Markdown vaults and LLM wikis w/ Gemma
Really like this model's knowledge, size, and performance, but ran into too many issues using it to make simple Markdown edits in my Vault... so I built Incise.
Incise is a toolset that integrates with both Pi and Hermes. The idea is to improve reliability by changing the tool interface in ways that the model can better interface with according to its limited capabilities.
With this toolset, I can now use Gemma 4 reliably, and it is MUCH faster.
Across 48 tasks and 10 seeds:
- 480 trials attempted
- 479 usable trials after one persistent generation timeout
- 475/479 correct (99.2%)
- Zero harmful outcomes
- 200/200 routed trials correct
- The four remaining failures were loud operation errors; none damaged the document
- 65,536-token context
- Thinking/reasoning explicitly disabled - turning it on just slowed down the changes, didn't reduce accuracy.
- Four-turn limit
Results by family:
